Finally…a win for Reading

It has been a quite long time since Reading managed to win a game in NVL Mens Div1. Actually, it was only the 1st match of the season where RVC claimed the victory against Sheffield II. Last Saturday though(December the 6th), after a great performance, RVC achieved its 2nd win for this season against London Lynx. Tomek Swierczek was undoughtly the MVP of the game. Giannis Manolakis was in great shape mentally and physically. Giacomo Motiezzi demonstated some aspects of his Italian volleyball culture and David Siwek displayed his great skills as libero. Tom Jones played against his brother but showed no mercy for him, while Keith Paskins is still blocking the Lynx hitters…A big Bravo goes also to Songnan Yang who supported the team from the bench.

Next game for Reading VC is on Sunday the 14th of December against Sheffield II at Reading University Sports Park.

Reading lost from Bristol

ReadingVC did not manage to win at Bristol and finally lost 3-2 after an exciting game.

The sets were: 25-20, 25-11, 24-26, 22-25, 25-23

Reading VC lost from Newcastle

Reading lost at home 3-0 from Newcastle Staffs after a quite bad prformance especially in reception.

The sets were: 20-25, 24-26, 22-25

Reading squad was composed by: Dimitris Balagiannis, Giannis Manolakis, David Siwek, Tomek Swierczek, Ian horman, Tom Jones, Keith Paskins, Nico di Leo, Karol Kowalski, Songnan Yang.

Next game is on Saturday the 25th of October against Bristol at Bristol.

Reading VC lost from Polonia

After a poor performance, ReadingVC lost in London from Polonia 3-1. Despite that Reading players tried hard to claim the win, Polonia proved too strong and secured quite confidently the match.

The sets were: 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-15.

The RVC squad was composed by Giannis Manolakis (captain and coach), Dimitris Balagiannis, Tomek Swierczek, Tom Jones, Ryan Jones, Keith Paskins, Karol Kowalski, Ian Horman (Libero).

Next game for RVC will be at home against Newcastle on Saturday the 18^th of October. Worm up starts at 16:10 and the game starts at 16:40.

Reading lost from Coventry

Reading lost from Coventry & Warwick Riga 3-0. The sets were 14-25, 14-25, 18-25. Reading players did their best but Riga proved too strong.

Next week Reading does not have a game to play and it is a great opportunity for the team to train on its defects in order to present a more competent team on the games to come.

Reading VC lost from the Cup holders

Reading travelled to Sheffield for the 2nd weekend running, this time to take on the national cup holders Sheffield I.

Despite being under strength, Reading made a strong start with efficient blocking, organised defence and powerful hitting. Sheffield were pushed all the way until 21-20 when they stepped up a gear and with strong jump service closed out the set 25-22.

With the 1st set under their belts the home team were able to relax and put relentless pressure on the Reading passing unit. With no subs available, Reading was unable to find a way back into the set. Similarly, Reading lost the 3rd set and the match.

For Reading VC played: Giannis Manolakis, Dimitris Balagiannis, Ian Horman, Keith Paskins, Nico di Leo, Ryan Jones, Karol Kowalski.

The score per set was 25-22, 25-12, 25-12 for Sheffield I.

Next week, on Sunday the 28th of September at 14:40, RVC plays their first home game of the season against Coventry & Warwick Riga.

Good start for Reading

Reading came back from one set deficit to win their first Division 1 match with 3-1 set.

Reading started off slow with poor passing and inability to pick up easy balls and tips. Sheffield capitalised by keeping it tight and closed out the set 25-17 leaving the Reading players looking a forlorn batch.

After a strong team talk by Coach/setter Giannis Manolakis, the team regrouped for the 2^nd set performing high quality volleyball with powerful serve by Tomek Swierczek and Dimitris Balagiannis as well as solid blocking from Nico di Leo and Keith Paskins in their debut in NV1. Despite Sheffield’s organised defence, Reading managed to mend the holes and convincingly win the 2^nd set 25-18.

As Reading confidence grew, their Polish/English star Karol Kowalski began to open his shoulders and assisted Reading to a comfortable win 25-14 on the third set. While on the final set Sheffield looked rejected and the boisterous, Reading bench drove their team home, libero Ian Horman kept a consistent passing and helped setter Giannis Manolakis to dictate the pace of the attack. A last ditch attempt from Sheffield to level the match came too late as Reading powered the last ball and won the set 25-22 and the game.

Next week, Reading will go back to Sheffield to play against cup holders Sheffield I.

Season 2006/2007

RVC managed to win the promotion to National Devision 2.

Facts fron this Season 2007/2008:

RVC finished first and undefeated
Coach Thomas Swierczek was voted as the Best Coach of the Division 3W
Thomas Swierczek and Giannis Manolakis were into the Top10 MVP list of the season
